Abstract

Profile of George Smith, 55, Winthrop native, head of the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine (SAM), television host, and newspaper columnist. Smith has turned a moribund organization into a strong political force. Currently, he is marshaling his forces to defeat a referendum effort to ban bear baiting in Maine. A longtime Republican political consultant, he became head of SAM in 1992. Some believe he is on the wrong side of every environmental issue, while others praise his effectiveness and political astuteness. Smith's conservatism is rooted in Maine traditions like hunting, and he supports his three liberal offspring.
