Abstract

A look at nine owner-operated shops. Maine House Furnishings in Abbot, owned by Viennese emigres, Sieglinde and Meinulf Poiss, features furniture designed by their son Dominic. At Rock, Paper, Scissors in Wiscasset, Erika Soule sells a variety of paper items. Chris and Bernie DeLisle, with help from their three children, run Aboca Beads in Damariscotta. Bill Martens, of Chilton Furniture of Freeport and Scarborough, turned the venerable paint manufacturing store into one making fine furniture. Nancy Kimball Ho's Kimball Shop & Boutique has long been in her family and caters to residents of the upscale area. Wendy Scott and Jim Smith run Bark Harbor, a natural products pet store in Bar Harbor. Lesley Johnston runs Handle It in Rockland, selling knobs, handles, and other "hard" decorating items. Charles Godfrey, owner of Wallingford Farm, sells local produce and related items to support the restoration of his 1804 Wallingford House in Kennebunk and the pastoral way of life. Fabrics de France in Camden and Falmouth, started by French-born Yves Vitasse and his Swedish wife Teresa, sells imported textiles.
