Abstract

Profile of Freeport artist Sarah Knock, 56, a recipient of a 2002 Maine Arts Commission Individual Artist Fellowship. A native of Michigan, Knock grew up near a lake and moved to Maine in 1974. She taught high school English, studied photography and fine arts, and started painting from old tintypes. She began kayaking and was drawn to the abstract patterns on the surface of the water, which she paints from photographs, working on at least five paintings at a time. Her paintings have found a ready audience, and a single one can command more than $10,000.
