Abstract
"What's in a Picture?" piece on the transport by wooden scow of an 1806 Federal-style ship captain's house from Phippsburg to Rockport, after Donald D. Dodge purchased it in July 1925. The Thomas McCobb house was known as the Spite House because it was deliberately built to overshadow a family home that McCobb believed had been usurped by a stepmother. After moving the house to Rockport, Dodge created elaborate Colonial Revival gardens around it.
