Abstract

"I Remember" piece on the author's grandfather, Ed Beem, who helped establish Little League baseball in Portland. His house was in sight of the diamond behind Deering High School, and the Little League equipment was stored in his basement. Beem describes "the boys of the summer of '57," now men pushing 60. The only member of that championship team still playing baseball is Mort Soule, who last summer was the Most Valuable Player of an over-50 league in Bath. Player Tommy Allen grew up to become First District Congressman Tom Allen.
