Abstract

Portland businessman Frank Akers has called for Maine to abandon Eastern Standard Time and join the Canadian Maritime Provinces in the Atlantic Time Zone. He argues that the extra sunlight will encourage shopping and reduce energy use. Portland Newspapers Editor George Neavoll endorsed his cause, adding that the zone change will facilitate trading with natural partners in the Maritimes and Atlantic Rim.
