Abstract

"North by East" piece on Tom Duym, a vocational teacher at Deer Isle-Stonington High School, who has introduced an interdisciplinary curriculum to help the next generation sustain the area's fishing economy. Because the older generation has less time to pass on fishing knowledge, he includes courses on subjects such as marine ecology, boatbuilding, and shoreline economics and has students do projects like developing a business plan for a fishing vessel. Next year he plans to take students to Iceland.
