Abstract
An article on the sole year-round residents of Northeast Carry, Shirley and Ed Raymond, who run Raymond's Country Store and rent cabins. Almost 30 years ago, they left their jobs at a high-tech company in Massachusetts. The camp is located between Moosehead Lake and the West Branch of the Penobscot River. The Raymonds built the buildings themselves and without a loan. They now cater to snowmobilers, selling gas, grooming trails, and sometimes seeing 2,000 sleds on a weekend day. Summer traffic has dropped off to almost nothing, partly due to steep gate fees charged by Great North Woods Inc., and the Raymonds no longer rent cabins in the summer.
