Abstract

An article on the 137 volunteers who comprise the Casco Bay Flotilla of the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in South Portland and who help lighten the load for the post-9/11 Coast Guard. The organization has no military or law-enforcement authority. Maine has other flotillas, but the one in Casco Bay is the largest and expects to conduct about 130 patrols this year. One volunteer called the training "phenomenal." Among its many other duties, the Auxiliary does public education. With details on those duties, the rewards and challenges of the service, and comments from volunteers.
