Abstract

An article on artist Andrew Winter (1893-1958), a native of Estonia who lived with his wife Mary Taylor on Monhegan Island year-round. Although he earned a modest living from his realistic paintings of the island, he was more derivative than innovative and was largely unknown and unappreciated. There have been two major retrospectives of his work since his death--one in New York City and one at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, which owns a number of his works.
