Abstract

An essay by author Paul Theroux on his solitary winter stay at a primitive cabin overlooked by Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park, during which time he used skis to explore the wilderness around him. Eventually a spell of wet weather and icy conditions forced him to end his adventure prematurely, but he said it was difficult to adequately describe the rewards of his experience.
