Abstract

"North by East" piece on Jessica Muhlin, a University of Maine graduate student in marine science, who is mapping ocean currents in the Schoodic Point area to determine their effect on rockweed reproduction. Rather than using expensive floating sensors, she tossed 500 oranges into the ocean, each carrying a handwritten tracking number and contact information, possibly a first-ever attempt. So far she has received over 50 responses.
