Abstract

Profile of Vietnam vet, Bowdoin College graduate, lawyer, and executive director of the Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM), Everett "Brownie" Carson, who is the recipient of the 2005 Down East Environmental Award. Carson has passionately taken on issues of pollutants such as mercury, stopping a proposed dam and working to remove existing dams on the Penobscot River, reviewing proposed development in the North Woods, cleaning up the Androscoggin River, and being a watchdog for environmental regulatory agencies. Since 1984, when he took over at NRCM, he has been a skillful leader and fund-raiser and has kept the organization focused on its roots in wilderness preservation.
