Abstract

Retired school superintendent Arthur Pierce, 79, of Belfast, is modest about the varied and harmonious garden he has created on his small lot. After taking a morning workshop, he built all the stonework in the garden, mostly from surplus or salvaged stone. Many of his plants were gifts. He created a bog and grows astilbe, irises, marsh marigolds, ferns, and hostas in the damp soil. Over the past decade, Pierce has climbed The Hundred Highest (peaks) in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont. He is also an avid skier, has canoed all the major rivers in Maine, and has climbed thirty peaks over 6,000 feet in North Carolina and Tennessee. With details on building a bog.
