Abstract
An article on Aldermere Farm in Rockport, land which gentleman farmer Albert H. Chatfield Jr.'s parents bought in 1899, and which he inherited and reclaimed as a working farm. He employed chiefly organic methods and raised a Scottish breed of cows called Belted Galloways, which were suited to Maine. Their meat is low in fat, and the breed has grown in popularity. Chatfield took the first steps to ensure the property would remain a working farm in 1974, and today the Maine Coast Heritage Trust holds title to the farm, a local landmark that is managed by Ron Howard, whose father managed the farm for the Chatfields.
