Abstract

"What's in a Picture?" piece on a 1945 photograph taken during a wrestling match at the Portland Expo between Leo Numa and Manuel Cortez. Cortez is challenging referee George Herman "Babe" Ruth, 51. Before the Red Sox incurred the infamous curse that bore his nickname, the Bambino served in various roles at boxing and wrestling matches and was a frequent visitor to the Pemaquid Peninsula during the 1920s and 1930s.
