Abstract

"North by East" piece on Ted Ames, Stonington lobsterman, marine biologist, and winner of a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant." He combined fishermen's accounts of Maine's inshore cod fishery with computer mapping techniques and scientific research to develop a picture of how the cod fishery collapsed. He also designed a revolutionary new lobster hatchery system.
