Abstract
Profile of Lucinda Yates, of South Portland, who went from homelessness to heading Designs by Lucinda, a company that makes whimsical pins that charities buy and resell for fundraising at a higher price. In 1989, her first year as Designs by Lucinda, she made $90,000 selling pins at $6 apiece. Sales topped $1.3 million two years later. Made by home assemblers who are free to use the design elements as they wish, each pin is unique. The design elements, made of matte board, are produced in a Portland plant. Yates spends time on the road giving inspirational talks.
