Abstract

Irv and Cynthia's 1828 house in Hallowell is surrounded by 48 lilacs planted by former Maine governor, Dr. John Hubbard, in 1865. Lilacs at the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow home in Portland date back to the 19th century, and those in the Portland Street Cemetery in South Berwick, where author Sarah Orne Jewett is buried, date back to 1909. With details on growing lilacs in Maine.
