    Abstract

"North by East" piece on two new state bridges, which were to be called the Downeast Gateway Bridge (between Prospect and Verona Island) and Cushnoc Crossing Bridge (across the Kennebec in Augusta). Aided by email and streaming internet broadcasts of Transportation Committee hearings, interest and controversy over the bridge names was high. Because of objections, the Downeast Gateway Bridge became the Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory. It will still probably be called the Bucksport Bridge by locals.
