Abstract

There are about 1,200 Maine islands of an acre or more, and some 600 of these are owned by individuals. Access, amenities, and asking prices vary dramatically for islands that are on the market. Chris Krowlow, founder of privateislandsonline.com, the largest Internet inventory worldwide, says the two hot spots are Maine and Florida. The Maine Island Trail Association (MITA), a 350-mile waterway consisting of state-owned and private islands available for day visits or camping, continues a tradition of public access. With details on the challenges of building on an island and on island owners Jane Arbuckle, Jim Kern, Bill Stanhope, Dodge Morgan, John Cacoulides, Ceil Simpson, and Bruce Poliquin.
