Abstract

Celebrities like John Travolta, Kelly Preston, and Kirstie Alley are drawn to the island privacy of the exclusive Islesboro colony, a short ferry ride from Lincolnville. Jobs are plentiful, but there is a shortage of resident workers, and islanders fear their home is turning into a summer community. The island school stays viable by attracting tuition-paying mainland students with its one-to-eight student-to-teacher ratio. Isleboro Affordable Property and the Isleboro Island Trust work to help the community stay true to its roots. As Waldo County's second-most valuable town, Isleboro continues its campaign to secede from the county.
