Abstract
The Hutchinson Center, the University of Maine's experimental satellite site in Belfast, was built by credit card company MBNA before it was sold to Bank of America. Originally aimed at MBNA employees, it now hosts conventions, offers graduate-level courses, has a Senior College and is fully self-supporting. Much of the credit for the center's success goes to James Patterson, the center's recently retired director. Bank of America took the high road and donated the facility to the university. The unexpected popularity of the center might make it a model for other Maine towns.
