Abstract
On a summer weekend day, the eighteen lifeguards on Ogunquit Beach protect up to 60,000 visitors, and last year won the State of Maine Lifesaving Championships, as they did in four of the last five years. Team captain Shannon Baker is a woman -- in the mold of Bette Davis, Ogunquit's only female lifguard in 1926.
