Abstract

CEO Chris McCormick, 50, of Freeport-based L.L. Bean calls shopping at the store a "value experience." The company overcame flat growth in the 1990s to emerge stronger than ever in recent years, through a combination of internal reorganization, updating, and expansion. The company continues to place quality and fairness on equal terms with profit and counts its employees, customers, shareholders, vendors, community members, and the environment as "stakeholders." The state profits from the company's presence, and Bean, in turn, markets the image of Maine.
