Abstract

Profile of painter Charles Wilder Oakes, 50, of Spruce Head. After years of struggling to earn a living through his art, his career is poised to take off, with his paintings selling for up to $28,000. Last year, all five pieces he showed at the Outsider Art Fair in New York City sold quickly. Summer resident Ralph Saltus made the connections that led to Oakes' inclusion in the fair. His paintings are colorful, slightly off-kilter depictions of day-to-day life of the Port Clyde of his youth.
