Abstract

Maine's 4,342-mile shoreline boasts just 41 publicized surfing breaks, mostly between Portland and Kittery, and the best waves occur in winter. The hardy souls who surf in winter say the experience is serene and relatively untainted by cliquishness and the extreme sports scene. There are 11 surf shops between Kittery and Portland, but the late and lamented Bikini Surf Shop in York is believed to be Maine's first. With comments from several winter surfers.
