Abstract

An article on Portland's growing fashion design industry, including Alex Carleton of Rogues Gallery, whose signature gothic designs have been seen on actor Brad Pitt, and Jill McGowan, whose line of tailored women's shirts is carried by big-name retailers. Although about 20 local designers have been featured in charity fashion shows at Portland's Space gallery, many of them don't have the desire to sell to a large market. Mark High and his wife Liz Woodbury sell their "Milo in Maine" line at an Old Port boutique. With the Internet, it is increasingly possible for designers to operate outside of the top fashion cities.
