Abstract
"The talk of Maine" piece on changes in the Portland arts scene. Ari Solotoff, executive director of the Portland Symphony Orchestra, last year got the Maine State Ballet and the Portland Ballet Company to collaborate on the "Magic of Christmas" concert, which the companies had previously feuded over. The partnership is emblematic of how the Portland arts community has become more open after a turnover in organizations and personnel in the past five years. Innovations include First Friday Art Walks, the Portland Music Foundation, SPACE Gallery, new artists' studios, the Portland Downtown District's art guide, and a soon-to-be-released national study of the economic impact of the arts, in which the Portland Arts and Culture Alliance participated.
