Abstract
Tim Swenson's $20 million Grand Victorian condominium hotel, modeled on the Hotel Velvet that burned on the site in 1907, is the most ambitious development Old Orchard Beach has seen in decades. Swenson, 41, is a driving force in the blue collar town's redevelopment, envisioning a safer, more family-oriented town on one of the finest beaches on the Maine coast. Opponents want the town to stay blue-collar and say the Grand Victorian will put part of the beach in shadow. Old Orchard Beach's Palace Playland is the last seaside amusement park in New England--others having been demolished for condos.
