Abstract
A look at harness racing, the only type of horse racing in Maine and a fixture at Maine agricultural fairs and the state's two commercial tracks. The author gets a behind-the-scenes look with Don and Linda Marean, owners of Lindon Horse Farm in Hollis. Their horse trainer and rider, Freeman Parker, 67, of Cornish, says the industry is rebounding, thanks income generated from the new slot machines in Bangor, some of which supports the industry. Don Marean, currently a state representative, strongly supports harness racing and the horse farms that he says help stem development. With details on breeding, raising, and racing horses and the commitment shown by the Mareans to their endangered way of life.
