Abstract

William Miller, a New York farmer who predicted the date of the Second Coming as March 21, 1844, (later amended to Oct. 22, 1944), found a receptive audience in Maine, where Millerites climbed to the tops of mountains to be "taken up." Around Lincolnville, some 100 people dressed in white "ascension robes" and climbed Mount Megunticook to what is now called the Millerite Cliffs. Miller brought his message to Portland in October 1841. With details of the "Millerite Excitement" as recounted by the media of the day.
