Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on a proposal by Peter Vigue, president and CEO of Cianbro Construction Company, to jumpstart the long-stalled east-west highway across Maine by building a private toll road from Calais to Coburn Gore. Vigue is convinced such a road would rebuild the economy of northern Maine and that it could be completed in five years. He is moving so fast on the plan that little opposition has surfaced. Anti-highway activist Tim Sullivan calls the project an "environmental nightmare," while others believe it would put Maine at the center of the combined New England-Maritime Canada commercial area, promoting trade and offsetting rising energy prices.
