Abstract
"What's in a Picture?" piece on a photo by Livermore Falls cameraman F. A. Wendell of the Maxim family in 1898. Hiram Maxim, in the photo, invented the machine gun some 14 years before the picture was taken at a family reunion in Wayne. Nine years before the Wright brothers, famous flight, Maxim, of Sangerville, built a powered aircraft that flew 600 feet. In the quest for an electric light bulb, he also developed a carbon filament that rivaled Edison's. Before his death in 1916, he said he wished his peaceful inventions had been more widely known.
