Abstract

In a controversial deal, Katahdin Lake and 6,691 acres surrounding it recently became part of Baxter State Park. The Trust for Public Land was intermediary in a complicated agreement that traded 7,400 acres of public lots and 14,000 acres of private timberland to the Gardner Land Company in return for the lake and the acreage. An offshoot of the deal was the creation of the "Conservation Recreation Forum" and the Natural Resource Network, coalitions that will try to bring together groups with various land-use philosophies. With details on the hard-won acquisition and on the history of the lake, the newest jewel in Baxter State Park.
