Abstract
A look at Christmas Prelude, a holiday-themed weekend that Kennebunkport started in 1982 and that now extends the Kennebunks' tourist season by almost two months. Prelude set the precedent for other local festivals and for communities searching for ways to extend the tourist season. Ogunquit now has a Christmas by the Sea celebration, a Mardi Gras festival, and a Patriot's Day event. The Camden Conference draws foreign policy experts and others every February and inspired an October symposium called Pop!Tech. Still, only 3 percent of queries to the Maine Tourism Office are about winter visits.
