Abstract
Maine's Land Use Regulation Commission is expected to approve Plum Creek's massive development plan for the Moosehead Lake region this fall, following four years of contention between the company and its adversaries. In the past ten years, more than seven million acres in Maine's North Woods have changed hands, hastening the decline of the area's outdoor recreation and forest-products industries and of its wildlife. Even more at risk is the promise of peace and remoteness the land offers. The author, an environmentalist and activist, argues that federal ownership of part of the North Woods might be the best means of preserving it.
