Abstract

Attendance at Maine's evangelical churches, such as Bangor Baptist Church and Calvary Chapel in Orrington, has swelled in recent years as mainline denominations continue to struggle. According to a 2008 survey, 37 percent of Mainers who identify as Protestant consider themselves evangelical. In the Bangor area alone, there are more than 40 churches, close to half of which are evangelical. Some churches offer assistance and outreach to the needy, coupled with a mandatory dose of scripture. In rural areas, the churches offer a ready-made community.
