Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on Malaga Island, where a century ago, some 40 black, white, and mixed-race inhabitants were deported, a fifth of whom were incarcerated on questionable grounds at the Maine School for the Feebleminded in New Gloucester. The story has come out into the open recently and there has been increased pressure on the state from descendants and others to issue a public apology. This spring, Maine lawmakers passed a joint resolution expressing "profound regret" for the Malaga incident, but unfortunately, the resolution received little publicity.
