Abstract
"The Talk of Maine" piece on the results of Maine's Republican gubernatorial primary, in which Waterville Mayor Paul LePage, supported by many Tea Party advocates, vanquished six other candidates by a large margin. The primary suggested Maine's moderate GOP might be undergoing a conservative realignment. Voters endorsed a platform that called for sealing U.S. borders, investigating the global warming "myth," and eliminating the U.S. Department of Education and the Federal Reserve, among other planks. In Somerset County, Republican candidate Peter Mills described an extreme right wing takeover of the organization.
