Abstract
For the past three years, Chris Sauer of the Portland-based Ocean Renewable Power Company (ORPC) has been testing prototypes of an underwater turbine generator in Passamaquoddy and Cobscook bays. In seven years, he expects to be generating 100 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 80,000 homes. He would like to expand into Canada, which would make Eastport an international technology transfer hub. A synergistic tidal-stream technology, which would complement ORPC's tidal-range technology, is being considered by Ramez Atiya of Salt Lake City. Together the two technologies could put Eastport at the center of tidal development.
