Abstract
A look at the historic villages along the Sandy River, downstream from Rangeley, the destination town. Strong, Avon, Phillips, and Madrid are bypassed by Route 4. The Forster Mill that made Strong "the toothpick capital of the world" closed in 2003 and later reopened as the Geneva Wood Fuels mill. In Phillips is Daggett Rock, the largest glacial erratic boulder in Maine. Madrid became an unorganized territory a decade ago.
