Abstract

This month, 120 million overseas TV viewers will watch 240 athletes from 30 countries compete in Presque Isle for the 2011 Biathlon World Cup. The athletes will be accompanied by over 300 support staff and some 40 camera crews and will attract 3,000 to 5,000 spectators each day. Biathlon combines cross-country skiing with precision shooting and is the premier winter sport of Europe. Credit for Aroostook County's emergence on the scene goes to the 12-year-old Maine Winter Sports Center. Presque Isle and Fort Kent are the seventh and eighth of nine 2011 Biathlon World Cup events and the only venues in North America. The St. John Valley has distinguished itself as an uncommonly hospitable stop on the circuit.
