Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on the rise of crimes in Maine tied to prescription drug abuse. The problem is growing worse with a five hundred percent rise in drug-related deaths in Maine. Unlike other areas of New England, prescription drugs, in particular Oxycontin, is the drug of choice for a variety of factors. Many times, legally prescribed medications are sold by the patient as a way to make money. One solution may lie in better monitoring of controlled substances. Other possible solutions include advocacy, education and an aggressive drug take back program.
