Abstract
"What's in a Picture?" piece on a 1911 photo of auto racing on Old Orchard Beach. The wide beach had at least five hours of dry, flat sand and few shells or rocks, making it ideal for racing. Louis Disbrow, a driver whose car reached nearly one hundred miles per hour and officially became the fastest car ever driven in Maine, was impressed with Old Orchard Beach, stating "I have never seen anything to equal it."
