Abstract

"The Talk of Maine" piece on the state of the Gulf of Maine cod fishery, once a booming industry that has been harmed through years of overfishing and increasingly efficient fishing technology. Although the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had stated in 2008 that the Gulf of Maine cod fishery was rebounding, their recent report shows that the cod population is only a fifth of the size needed to qualify as rebuilt by 2014. Some are skeptical about NOAA's population estimates and NOAA will likely cut catch quotas between 12 and 22 percent before making more drastic cuts in 2013.
