Abstract

In 1959, Bowdoin College professor Lawrence Sargent Hall wrote a short story called "The Ledge," which has become one of the best-known short stories in Maine literature. It was inspired by the true story of Buster Estes, his young son, and his nephew, who never returned from a hunting trip to Mink Rock in South Harpswell. The piece chronicles the history of the short story and touches on Hall's reflections about the difference between fact and fiction.
