Abstract

Long piece on the Amish settlement in Fort Fairfield in Aroostook County that was founded in 2007 by two families who wanted affordable land and farming opportunities for their children. Now twenty families from Ohio, Iowa, Missouri, and New York, make up the community which includes seven dairy farms, two schoolhouses, and a sheet metal business. The article explores some common misconceptions about the Amish, and discusses the challenges faced by the settlement.
