Abstract
The European green crab, Carcinus maenas, is wreaking havoc on Maine’s $15 million soft-shell clam industry. The green crabs breed quickly and can consume up to forty clams per day. In Freeport, efforts are underway to combat the invasion, with the town spending $70,000 to determine how best to accomplish this. The article surveys the research that is being conducted by scientists around the state and the various projects that have been undertaken in order to manage the invasive species.
