Abstract

“Talk of Maine” piece about Maine’s status as the oldest state in the country, with a median age of 43.5. While the state’s aging population poses challenges to the workforce and the economy, and while many of its young people continue to leave the state, there are reasons to be hopeful. Portland is experiencing an influx of younger people from around the country and has a growing immigrant population. The economy could also benefit from the fact that older people have a higher rate of entrepreneurism than younger people. The state still needs to work on the general perception that it is not a good place to grow a business.
